Drifting in Silence – Place In Time 2013
Place In Time is flat-out ambient music, a rich textural melange of timbres and carefully implied (but never overstated) melodies. Stembridge manages to bring to it lessons learned in the complex and intricate drum kit structures employed in recent releases such as Facewithin and Ladderdown. A close listen reveals, within the overlapping layers, the fine beat divisions that these danceable releases were noted for. In some cuts, including Never, the percussion instruments return, transformed into ambient textural and tonal layers. The percussion serves to leaven the ambient loaf, however, and the result is never jarring. The closing track, Perfection, summarizes the album’s musical thoughts, together with previous Drifting In Silence work, in a sonic landscape that brings to mind a drifting mechanical ocean.
